One Wall Of This: If cost is not a prime consideration, plaster walls should first be canvassed. This procedure excludes all possibility of visible Wall blemishes, and is permanent. The permanency is not to be overlooked in the final cost, as the canvas may be repainted many times without the necessity of patching the plaster. There are several different grades in canvas Wall coverings. Muslin and "Sanitas" make excellent surfaces for painting and may be applied to the Wall with ordinary wallpaper paste.
Mural decorations need not necessarily cover every Wall in a room. It is often advisable to limit such paintings to important areas, such as an overmantel or one Wall of this end of the room. Painted Decoration may also be concentrated over doors or in specified Wall panels. In small rooms it is possible to produce an impression of greater size through the use of perspective and atmospheric effects in a mural composition.See Also Wall Similar:Groups of three should usually be balanced with the largest picture in the center or two pictures should be of equal size. A better effect is obtained if the pictures in the same groups are similar in character and color value. Oil paintings and water colors hung in close proximity are usually inharmonious unless similar in tonal values, and colored pictures hung close to black-and-white drawings or reproductions have an appearance of inconsistency. Unsymmetrical groups of pictures may be arranged in Wall similar spaces that are not on the central axis of the room or in cases where pictures must accommodate themselves to adjoining furniture that is irregular in shape. Small pictures look best when hung at eye level. Large paintings that must be viewed from a distance may be hung at a greater height.It is advisable to avoid showing the wires necessary for picture hanging. These features create a problem that did not exist to the same extent in historical types of rooms in which similar types of Wall similars were pierced by doors and windows and compositional unity was attained by similarity of treatment on all four sides. The decorator must accept conditions such as these and must select and arrange the movable furnishings to harmonize with the permanent Wall similars and partitions that have been installed by the builder of the house.
On The Other Hand See Use Of Wall Color:Ceilings may be calcimined or painted white or off-white. An agreeable effect is obtained if the ceiling is treated in a lighter tint of the color use of Wall colord for the walls. Increase in color interest may be obtained by painting the ceiling a color contrasting, either in hue or in value, with the walls. Ceilings that are painted in a color darker than the walls or treated in gold or silver leaf tend toward a modern effect. If a definite color is use of Wall colord for the ceiling, it should be repeated elsewhere in the Decoration of the room.Using two or more colors on the walls in the same room is always logical if the materials are different, such as wood panelling on one wall, and plaster on the other, or if one Wall is treated with wallpaper and the other with paint. A plaster Wall may be painted a different color than the woodwork. Where wallpaper is use of Wall colord in part of a room, it is advisable to paint the remaining plaster walls with the lightest and most neutral color use of Wall colord in the wallpaper. The Wall area can often be painted the wallpaper-background color, or even more neutral in chroma. Where all walls are to be painted, decorators may use of Wall color two colors; the window Wall is generally painted in a lighter tonal value than the opposite wall. In a double-use of Wall color room (living room-dining room) an apparent division is often made by painting the walls different colors, and indicating the different use of Wall colors thereby. Walls should not arbitrarily be painted different colors, but may be if there is a logical reason for so doing.
If the architectural trim of a room is of little interest or is poorly designed, or if doors are badly distributed in the Wall composition, it is advisable to make such features as unobtrusive as possible by painting them the color of the walls. If the designing and distribution of the woodwork are good, this may be accentuated by causing the woodwork to contrast in color with the wall. Additional color interest may be obtained by striping certain moldings or the ornament of the wood trim.
