Advantages For Interior Paints: Synthetic paints. For many years the majority of house paints have been made with a base of white lead and oil, and these materials are still considered superior for surfaces subject to weather erosion, wear, and friction. Developments in chemistry have, however, produced several synthetic materials that indicate superior advantages for interior paints. These products are sold under trade names, but most of them are produced from alkyd enamels or latex rubber solutions.Surfaces painted with either of these synthetics are washable. One coat application is sufficient except on newly plastered walls, and they are fast drying and easy for the novice to apply. The alkyds are made in flat, semi-gloss, and high-gloss finishes, and withstand dampness well in kitchens and bathrooms. The latex types are also produced in a variety of finishes; they tend to leave brush marks but may be patched more easily if surfaces are damaged.
Paint is a mixture of a base, a pigment, and a binder or vehicle. The base, except for very dark paints, is white lead, which gives the paint its covering quality. The pigment or pigments give the paint its color and decorative quality. The binder serves to cement the pigment to the base and to the surface to be painted, and to make the consistency of the paint suitable for spreading evenly over a surface. In interior paints linseed oil is most commonly used as a binder, although varnish, glue, or casein are also used for special purposes. A cheaper grade of paint is made by adulterating the linseed oil with fish oil. A small amount of turpentine or benzine may be added to a paint mixture to dilute it in order to create a thinner layer to cover a larger surface area, to increase its rate of drying, and to give greater penetration of the pores of the surface to be painted.
